Brutus J. Clay

Brutus Junius Clay (July 1, 1808 – October 11, 1878) was a U.S. Representative from Kentucky.

Born in Richmond, Kentucky, Clay attended the common schools and graduated from Centre College, Danville, Kentucky. He engaged in agricultural pursuits and stock raising. He moved to Bourbon County in 1837 and continued former pursuits. He served as member of Kentucky House of Representatives in 1840.

Clay was elected president of Bourbon County Agricultural Association in 1840 and served thirty years. He served as president of the Kentucky Agricultural Association 1853-1861. He was again a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1860.

Clay was elected as a Unionist to the Thirty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1863 – March 3, 1865). He served as chairman of the Committee on Agriculture (Thirty-eighth Congress). He was not a candidate for reelection. He resumed former pursuits. He died near Paris, Kentucky, October 11, 1878. He was interred in the family burial ground at "Auvergne," near Paris, Kentucky.
